Issued By: FIRE PREVENTION (D. Day)
Approved By: Fire Chief William H. Mosher
Date of Issue: 1997/03/06
Revision Date: 1999/02/28

BACKGROUND:

TAPP-C is an awareness program designed to promote/foster attitudes and behaviours that will result in good fire safety practices.

PURPOSE:

To help reduce the number of fires, injuries and loss of life and property that is caused by juvenile fire setters.

OBJECTIVE:

The number of fires, injuries and loss of life and property (committed by juveniles) will be significantly reduced

SCOPE:

This operating guideline applies to those firefighters who volunteer to work on the TAPP-C Program.

PROCEDURE:

There are four levels of the educational component of TAPPs-C, each designed for a specific age group.

•    Level 1 for children aged 2-5 (Preschool)
•    Level 2 for children aged 6-8
•    Level 3 for children aged 9-12
•    Level 4 for children aged 13-17

Each level of the program consists of four sessions. The first session takes place in child’s home, while the next three sessions may take place in the fire hall.

Attitude is important. Firefighters should not be “assigned” to TAPP-C. Only the firefighters with a genuine interest should volunteer to work on this program.

The Firefighters who do volunteer to work on this program at the fire station should be willing to show TAPPC participants the fire stations, videos, provide an explanation of equipment and tour of apparatus.

REMEMBER that your expertise is fire safety. Assessment and treatment are the responsibility of mental health professionals. Never judge the participants involved in the program.
