PURPOSE:

The purpose of this operating guideline is to prevent the splitting of poly tanks due to over pressurizing.

OBJECTIVE:

The splitting of poly tanks due to over pressurizing will be eliminated.

SCOPE:

This operating guideline applies to career and volunteer members of Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency.

PROCEDURE
Tanks with a total capacity of less than 850 gallons should be filled at a rate no greater than the advertised capacity of the tank.

Example:

•    A 400 gallon capacity tank should be filled at a maximum rate of 400 gallons per minute (gpm).
•    Tanks 850 gallons and over the maximum fill rate is 850 gallons per minute.

When filling the tank use a 2.5 inch and fill through the pump to tank which is engineered to give the proper flow with a maximum pressure of 100 psi.

When filling through the 4 inch direct fill at the rear of a tanker, fill at a rate of 850 gallons per minute (gpm) at 100 psi.

Monitor the tank fill lights as the tank fills and throttle the fill valve closed as the full level is reached

NOTE: The tank fill indicators will give an inaccurate reading if the vehicle is filled on a slope.

OPERATING GUIDELINE REVIEW:

This operating guideline shall be reviewed when/if there are changes/amendments to the procedure for filling poly tanks.
